Irene makes landfall in North Carolina, winds drop to 85 mph
Shortly after Hurricane Irene made landfall near Cape Lookout, N.C. around 8:00 a.m. EST Saturday morning, forecasters said Irene’s winds had dropped to 85 mph. Nonetheless, forecasters say the hurricane remains a large and dangerous storm as it moves toward the mid-Atlantic and New England.
