For those of you who missed Jarrett Walker’s hat tip, TransLink has finally unveiled an excellent system-wide frequency map (PDF), a vast improvement over its predecessor (PDF), which bears several similarities to Metro’s current system map. The map uses both color and line weight (thickness) to denote frequency while basic and limited services […]
The Summer 2012 Sound Transit schedule book is now available; new timetables take effect Saturday, June 9th. There are no changes to Link. Sounder is unchanged, although maintenance in the South Corridor might aggravate drivers and pedestrians. Below are the bus revisions, especially big changes in Pierce County: Route 542: Revised stops at Redmond Transit […]
King Tut taking up residence at King Street Station. “North Corridor” is now officially “Lynnwood Link”. I-90 lawsuit may go back to the Washington Supreme Court. Downtown condo market is improving. Council backs off corner store portion of Regulatory Reform proposal. Former Hopelink employees commit bus pass fraud nearly worth six fi […]
Seattle City Council Member (and Sound Transit Board Member) Richard Conlin was cited as a source in the comments on my last post about the currently-circulating rumors of a “back room deal” for a 900-stall parking garage at Northgate. I asked him for comment about this, and here’s what he had to say: ST has [...]
I’ve finally made it through Puget Sound Sage’s much-hyped report “Transit Oriented Development that’s Healthy, Green, and Just.” I read it warily, but was pleasantly surprised by many of the conclusions, even as I had issues with some important omissions. As it happens, the argument the report makes is largely orthogonal to the […]
On Wednesday evening, 6-8:30 PM in the Neptune Theatre, Sound Transit is hosting an open house to present, and obtain public feedback on, the 60% design of Brooklyn Station. ST staff tell me there is “nothing earth-shattering” in the changes to the station itself since 30% design. Long-time readers will recall that due to very [...]
Dan Bertolet has an interesting post up about the “fourth wave of planning”. I have thought for a while that each generation of environmentalists is shaped in response to the differing environmental challenges of their time. While older generations of environmentalists were shaped by the back-to-the-land movement, one that believed in an essentia […]
Cascade Bicycle Club is currently running a blog post under the title “A backroom deal for Northgate that’s bad for bicycling“, which reads in part: What we do know is that Sound Transit reached a backroom deal to build a parking garage without any public involvement, none. A backroom deal that a prominent neighborhood leader described as [...] […]
Two interesting opportunities for the public to comment this week: Sound Transit is holding a public hearing on Ride Free Area elimination. It’s at Union Station this Thursday from 12:30 to 1pm. The stated purpose of this meeting is to receive comment from the public. The Puget Sound Regional Council is doling out $2.3m in [...]
Last Monday night I happened to witness a service disruption on Link. It was not Sound Transit’s finest hour. I got the story from Link Operations Director Paul Denison via spokesman Geoff Patrick: The service disruption began after a 7:57 p.m. departure from Westlake experienced a brake fault and had to be removed from service. Several [...]
If you’re a big union person and a transit buff, have I got an event for you on Monday: You are invited to join us next Monday, May 21st for an evening of Rider-Driver Solidarity, and a discussion of the future of public transit in King County. There will be a guest appearance by Seattle folk [...]
This week, I assembled the answers to a handful of Metro- and SDOT-related questions that’ve been floating around in my head for a while. Perhaps others will find the answers interesting. First, I wanted to confirm that Metro’s new trolleybuses will have A/C. I understand there was some internal debate at Metro as to whether the [...]
Metro is collecting ideas on how to improve service in Southeast Seattle: This spring Metro is holding conversations with community organizations, bus riders, and residents of southeast Seattle about transit options in their community. Our goal is to learn about ways to make transit easier and more inviting to use. At every conversation, we ask people [...]
U-Link tunneling is complete. Big Oil pumping money into Eyman’s I-1185 TCC looking for a Field Director. Eight free bus tickets coming soon. The ideal form for subways emerges. Flawed argument for European/DC style density over Manhattan style density. Seattle places 7th national for “bike score”. Seattle’s housing recovery on the ho […]
In preparation for tomorrow’s Ride Free Area forum, I thought it would be a good time to discuss distance based fares. One of the real problems I’ve had with ending the RFA is that King County Metro’s fare system is nearly flat. Flat fares are a bit like having a single price for ice cream, [...]
Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 232-190 to defund the American Community Survey (ACS), one of the Census Bureau’s most significant demographic data-collection programs in addition to the decennial census. The ACS, conducted annually, effectively replaced the long-form of the census and provides important data to planners and policym […]
On Friday Transportation Choices Coalition is putting on a forum about the end of the Ride Free Area (RFA). The panel is gangbusters: Tim Harris- Real Change News Jim Jacobson- King County Metro Bill LaBorde- City of Seattle Zach Shaner - Seattle Transit Blog The talk begins at noon at Seattle Municipal Tower. RSVP here.
Sound Transit held a media event underneath Pine Street, next to I-5, this morning, at the site of Brenda’s final breakthrough into the Pine Street Stub Tunnel, from where this photo was taken; local transit dignitaries also made some remarks. The face of the cutter head will be unmounted and rolled to the right (as [...]
Update: The current Yesler Terrace project is 22-acres. The redevelopment is expanding it to 30 acres. So I’ve updated the math. Point still holds. The Seattle Times ran an article about concerns over the Yesler Terrace replacement project. What jumped out at me: [Hired land use consultant Matthew] Gardner is skeptical that Yesler can capture [...]

Seven Saar’s MarketPlace locations in South King and Pierce counties now offer bus, train and ferry riders the opportunity to pick up new ORCA cards at the same time they buy their groceries. For a limited time, new adult ORCA cards are available without fees for customers who add at least $5 to the card’s E-purse or purchase a monthly pass.
The opening marks completion of the second stage of a project important to maintaining traffic flow across Lake Washington. The final phase of the project will culminate in full-time HOV lanes in both directions of I-90 between Bellevue and Seattle, continuing a long-term partnership of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Sound Tran […]
